Fuel Efficiency:

Comparing the Red States and Blue States

When speaking of fuel usage, Americans are often lumped together as having similar consumption habits. This is not true and some states are significantly more efficient than others.

This site compares vehicle fuel efficiency by state and illustrates contrasting efficiencies between Red States and Blue States. Six of the ten states with the highest vehicle fuel efficiency went to John Kerry in 2004. Nine of the ten states with the worst fuel economy went to George Bush.

Vermont leads the nation in fuel efficiency with about 23. 5 mpg based on 2002 data. The national median is about 16.4 mpg. Vermont's fuel efficiency is about 40% better than the nation's as a whole. What do they drive and how do they drive in the Green Mountain State to do so well? What is the effect of toll roads (frequent starts and stops) on these statistics? New Hampshire and Massachusetts have extensive toll roads and have much lower fuel efficiency than Vermont. Individual state values are shown in the table, below the graph.

Red data points represent states won by Bush. Blue data points represent states won by Kerry.
